Victoria, therapy dog in training, on her first visit to various nursing homes in Flushing, Michigan. Unbelievably, she marched in like an old hand and tripped down the hallways like she owned the place. Absolutely no fear of wheel chairs, walkers, buffing machines, or strangers. Actually went into the rehabilitation room and tried to exercise with the patients. |
| She will be going with Cedar, (Ch. Honor's Tree of Life) each Thursday from now on to two nursing homes, an Alzheimer's unit, a closed head injury facility, and an assisted living home. The photo of
"Toria" in the ladies lap is rather unique. The lady's name is Lillian and she is 102 years young and is the oldest living graduate of Harvard University. So in one photo we have the youngest (8 weeks) and the oldest in the facility. |

CH HONOR'S TREE OF LIFE aka Cedar

Just thought I would let you know how my Christmas
holidays are going. Last week, I dressed like Santa
Claus and visited my friends at the nursing home and
then went to the "Country View" closed head injury
facility. The people there are really glad to see me,
but they have problems controlling their arm movement,
so sometimes they hit me sort of hard. I don't mind
though, because I've been taught that it is OK, so I
just wag my tail and show a lot of love. The week
end before Christmas all my friends and I went to the
local grocery store for two days and collected for the
dogs and cats at the Humane Society. We collected
over 16,000 lbs. of dog food and money. My new best
buddy, J.R. was a real hit in his Angel halo. I was a
"reindog" because the only way you get to be Santa
is by seniority and Mark is the oldest. I hope you
enjoy the newspaper article and the photos. I miss
you and wish you a wonderful "New Millinium."

from the Leader Dogs for the Blind School in Rochester Michigan. Five of the
puppies in the litter graduated and are now providing newfound freedom and
mobility to their new owners. Two were selected to go into their breeding
program and two were released for work related short comings. The average for a
litter passing is 30-40%. So Cedar is wayyyyyyy above average. |

Barbara Roberts is "Jack's" owner and writes:
"Jack has been a therapy dog at Penrose Hospital
(Colorado) since he was seven months old, and he's almost nine now. Here
he is at work (in his scubs) and at rest after giving his all! Everyone
in the hospital knows and loves Jack. They may not know MY name, but the
elevator door can't open without someone yelling, "hey, Jack".
He brings so much joy and love to patients, their families and the staff,
that I can't imagine him retiring. Visiting people with his special
therapy is Jack's true calling. |
Honor’s Is There a Doctor In the House?
Mike made his
first hospital visit when he was 8 weeks old, accompanying his Uncle Jack, who
was getting ready to retire from weekly visits. Mike gradually replaced Jack and
was full-time at 8 months. He is now visiting 2 hospitals weekly and
occasionally volunteers at our library. He’s a great hit with patients, staff
and visitors. He’s especially helpful in the pediatrics ward and in the
chemotherapy treatment room. Petting and talking to a dog seems to help these
patients through often-difficult procedures and offers a fun distraction to
children. We meet a lot of people who say that Mike is the best thing that
happened in their day and that always makes our day. We had a doctor tell Mike
that he was born for his work and he is right. Like Jack, he has found his
calling. |

From "Guthrie's" owner Jules Talarico:
"My school is Horizon High School in Scottsdale Arizona and every Wed. is Guthrie's work day. During my second hour prep period we both head down to the Special Ed classes for the period. Guthrie is working mainly with two Down's Syndrome students. They walk Guthrie around the school while they collect the attendance for the front office. Then they sit and pet him and get plenty of kisses. We are slowly working with another student who has a hard time touching anything...she tries and we really feel she wants to pet Guthrie but then always pulls back at the end...Guthrie just patiently waits... On other evenings, Guthrie works for the Sun Health Hospital Organization and we visit an elderly Care Center or the hospital. His work includes bedside visitation with the patients and the staff...(he's a big favorite). |

"BUDDY"
Honor's Mitchell's Buddy, therapy puppy purchased by Dan & Elizabeth Klaus
Banner, who was 9 months old when this picture was taken, is a wonderful
companion for our son Mitchell. Mitchell, who is 5 years old, was born with an extra chromosome.
He is very delayed in his development. Mitchell can walk with assistance and gets
around very well by crawling. Banner is a great motivator for Mitchell.
Mitchell follows Banner around the house to see what he is doing and to
pet him or play with him. Banner knows that Mitchell is different
from his two older brothers and is very gentle with him.
Banner is a part of our family and we are very thankful to have him.

"DEACON"

"This is Brooke Kimberly with her puppy Deacon. Deacon is truly a gift from God. He came to us in such a way that we knew God was orchestrating all of it. Brooke suffers from rheumatoid arthritis in over 13 joints from her neck to her feet. Many of the simple things we can do for ourselves are insurmountable for Brooke. Scratching an itch on her leg, getting up from a chair, picking up something she has dropped, turning off the light once she is in bed, etc. Not being able to do some of these things leaves her frustrated .... and then along came Deacon. He is now 15 months old & is very much the Golden Retriever puppy! He has begun obedience training for dogs his age & is doing very well. Once he graduates from this class then he will be able to be trained as a service dog for Brooke. He will learn how to pick up things for her , retrieve things that are too high up, turn off & on lights, assist her in getting up from a chair, walk with her & protect her from people bumping into her, give her confidence & love too! Already Deacon senses there is something special about Brooke. He is sensitive to her needs. They are a team. There are almost no words for the emotional support and self image improvement Deacon brings a young girl that suffers such difficulties."

| Jesse, aka Hytree's All Fired Up, CD, CGC, TDI,(bred by Donna Edwards and Paige McBride) owned, trained and mostly loved by Donna Sadlik of Mentor, Ohio is a very special companion and therapy dog. Donna and Jesse visit Lake East Hospital in Painesville, Ohio every Sunday. The patients and hospital staff adore Jesse and he adores them right back. He never tires of the hugs and kisses he receives or gives as he makes his rounds in the Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Unit. Jesse and Donna also visit local nursing homes and have organized mini "fun" dog shows and obedience demonstrations to entertain the residents. Jesse has points towards his breed championship, has an obedience title, is trained in agility and is a member of an obedience drill team, however, his therapy work is his favorite activity and the most rewarding thing Donna has ever done with any of her dogs. |

FUN?
"Gotta" is a stunning
example of one of our retired Champions. She lives with Grace Malone whose
son is autistic. "Gotta" supervises all the Special Olympic Training and
Competition Days when she's not at home taking care of Grace's son Whitney.

It is with great sorrow that we notify some of "Gotta's" friends and family, that she has gone to be with the Lord.
"Gotta" was from Bunny's very first litter and was one of her first champions. "Gotta" made many, many friends from Texas to Massachusetts while she was out being shown to her championship; and although she had only 4 puppies herself, she is auntie to many other wonderful dogs through her famous brothers and sisters. Two of "Gotta's" sons went on to Show Dog Hall of Fame status and notable records.
After her retirement from the show ring and brief stint in the whelping box, "Gotta" served as a therapy dog, where at 8 years of age she suffered an accident that shattered one of her rear legs. Bone specialists said it was one of the worst injuries they had ever seen. Since she was a very large bitch, we chose to have 6 surgeries performed over the next year rather than cut off the leg, since we felt it would give her the strongest chance to bear her weight into old age. Unfortunately, it appears that so many surgeries had the ultimate wear on her physically as it was her kidneys that eventually shut down. However, the additional four and a half years of her life, she lived to the fullest with Grace Malone and her autistic son in Napa California. It was Gotta who took away Whitney's fear of dogs, and it was Gotta who went with them to many Special Olympics training days and gave other kids encouragement to see a handicapped dog having absolutely no idea that she was "special too". You see, the best surgeons could only repair her rear leg to stick straight out and stiff - - so when she jogged or ran, Gotta would sling her leg straight out to the side and kept up with the best of them. Gotta never let her leg bother her or slow her down - she simply had the heart of a true champion in everything she did.
We hope that this will bring a small honor to one of the truly great goldens that had a heart bigger than she was. |

Angel's owner is an eye surgeon and
he has taken Angel to the office
with him since she was 8 weeks old.
Angel gives hugs and love and kisses to patients who are depressed
about their visual loss. By feeling her, and sensing her love and
acceptance, they in turn learn to cope with their illness. She shares
my office and does her "consults" right where my desk is. She has treated
about fifty patients already-and we are thinking of doing a TV special
on her. Angel is the youngest dog ever to pass her
Good Citizen-Therapy test in New York State. We are proud of
her-she is also the best looking Golden in the entire area.
Bear is owned by Arlene Stopa of Setauket, New York and she writes:
"Today, at nine weeks, Bear made his first visit to Kipp Pavillion, a residence for Alzheimer patients . Bear's first visit we met with thirty residents in their recreation room. Many Alzheimer folks have a flat affect and find communication difficult. What an absolute joy to see their faces break into broad smiles when they saw fluffy Bear. As he licked them and cuddles on their laps, they stroke his hair, hug him and exclaim how cute he is. They clapped when he showed his tricks of coming and retrieving. Bear's patience, personality and great adaptability make him a wonderful pet for this mission.
Update at 12 weeks: Here is Bear outside with my mom. The residents have started a bulletin board with photos to mark Bear's growth. Many residents remember him and he puts on a swagger when he enters. Others smile, pat him and talk about loving dogs. One says she is going to "puppy-nap" him and take him home. My mom wants to know when I will teach him to call her Grandma. To some, Bear brings back memories of past relationships with pets, for others he is a fluffy, cute, funny, living creature to pet and embrace. He adds spark and laughter to their lives. Unconditional love is what Bear is all about!"
We visit Kipp once a week. Residents feel very comfortable with him. Some get on the floor and hug him. A really lovely story. One gentleman in a wheelchair, stares downward and doesn't much relate to surrounding stimuli. BEAR licked his hand. I put his head under the gentleman's hand, he gently pet BEAR and smiled. |
